The Moldovan crossing is an example of an "invisible" route that suddenly becomes the most convenient when the rest is jammed. Chișinău airport handles low-cost airlines and charters that are often cheaper than flights to Kyiv; the Mohyliv-Podilskyi crossing is the fastest way from Chișinău into Ukraine.
One main crossing
Mohyliv-Podilskyi (Atachi/Otaci on the Moldovan side) is the main passenger checkpoint between Moldova and Ukraine. Located on the Dniester river, it directly connects the Moldovan town of Soroca (via a ferry) and the Ukrainian Mohyliv-Podilskyi in Vinnytsia oblast. Operates 24/7, takes cars, buses, motorcycles.
Smaller crossings (Sokyriany, Bronnytsia, Kuchurhan) operate with limitations: some only daytime, some only for residents of border districts. For foreign travellers the main choice is Mohyliv-Podilskyi.
The Transnistria situation deserves a separate note. This is a separatist region of Moldova not controlled by the Moldovan government. Ukraine does not recognise Transnistria and does not accept entry through its de-facto border. If your route from Chișinău goes through Transnistria (e.g. to Odesa via Tiraspol), Ukrainian guards will not let you through. The route must go via official Moldovan control and official Ukrainian control — meaning Mohyliv-Podilskyi.
Wait times
The Moldovan crossing has one of the smallest flows among Ukraine's western borders. Typical figures:
- Weekday nights: 15–30 minutes.
- Weekday daytime: 30 minutes to an hour.
- Weekends: an hour to an hour and a half.
- Peak (holidays): 1.5–2.5 hours — rarely longer.
This makes Mohyliv-Podilskyi one of the fastest crossings on average. Checking the SBGS site before leaving is a good habit, but you don't need to worry about queues here.
Cameras and online queues
Real-time wait at the Mohyliv-Podilskyi crossing:
- Official SBGS map — dpsu.gov.ua/ua/map: interactive map with queue counter, updated every 10–15 minutes.
- Nakordoni — nakordoni.eu: on the Mohyliv-Podilskyi → Otaci page you see the current queue and peak forecast. Data combines flows from the SBGS and Moldovan border service.
There are no public webcams from the Ukrainian side under martial law — cameras are hidden for security reasons. The queue counter remains a stable source.
How to reach Mohyliv-Podilskyi from Moldova
From Chișinău. 200 km by road, 3.5–4 hours by car. Route — north via Soroca, then south-west into Ukraine via ferry or bridge. The fastest option for travellers flying into Chișinău airport (KIV).
From Soroca. 50 km, an hour by car. Soroca is a town on the Moldovan side of the Dniester, with a 15th-century fortress — worth a stop.
From Bălți. 100 km, 1.5 hours. An alternative for travellers arriving from north-western Moldova.
From Bucharest via Moldova. 600 km via Leușeni-Albița or Sculeni-Ungheni (Moldova-Romania border, Schengen procedure for those from Romania), then through Moldova to Mohyliv-Podilskyi. Travel time 9–11 hours total, plus the Moldova-Romania crossing. In most cases faster via Siret (B6).
By public transport. Buses Chișinău-Mohyliv-Podilskyi-Kyiv run daily (Atlassib, Eurolines, local operators); 8–9 hours total. A direct train Chișinău-Kyiv exists (overnight), 12–13 hours — a comfortable option in coupe or SV.
Crossing infrastructure
On the Moldovan side, Otaci is a small village with a few shops, a gas station, an exchange counter. The last gas station is in Soroca; right at the border fuel is scarce.
On the Ukrainian side, Mohyliv-Podilskyi is a small town with a railway station, hotels (Hotel Podillia on the main street), PrivatBank ATMs, basic shops. Infrastructure is better than at smaller borders — it's a regional district centre.
Right by the exit from the checkpoint there are taxis (Bolt and Uklon work in town), a marshrutka to Vinnytsia, an exchange counter with mediocre rate, a café with Wi-Fi.
Onward from Mohyliv-Podilskyi
Vinnytsia — 100 km by road, 1.5 hours. The regional centre of Vinnytsia oblast, with Gorky park, the Roshen fountain (one of Europe's largest), and an accessible hotel stock.
Kyiv — 380 km via Vinnytsia, 5–6 hours by car. Or by Intercity+ train Vinnytsia-Kyiv (2.5 hours after arriving in Vinnytsia).
Kamianets-Podilskyi — 130 km, 2 hours. A 14th-century rock castle, one of Ukraine's most beautiful old towns.
Chernivtsi — 200 km via Kamianets-Podilskyi, 3 hours.
Odesa — 380 km via Vinnytsia and Uman, 5–6 hours.
When this option is the best choice
You flew into Chișinău. From Chișinău airport, the only fast route into Ukraine is via Mohyliv-Podilskyi; otherwise it's via Romania or by air.
You're heading to central Ukraine (Vinnytsia, Kyiv, Poltava) or the south. Through Moldova — direct route.
You want to see Moldova on the way. Chișinău, Soroca — worth a day or two.
Polish crossings are jammed. In a force-majeure scenario, the crossing through Moldova is a backup option with 4–5 hours of extra driving.
When this option isn't optimal
You're flying into Polish, Slovak, Hungarian, Romanian cities. The crossings are closer there.
You're heading to western Ukraine (Lviv, Zakarpattia). Through Moldova it's a long detour east.
You're renting a car and don't have permission to leave for Moldovan-Ukrainian territories. Some rental companies in Chișinău forbid travel through Transnistria or restrict routes into Ukraine. Clarify when booking.
Checklist
- Valid passport.
- Printed travel insurance with Ukraine coverage.
- Cash: 100–200 Moldovan leu (MDL), 100 euros or dollars, 1–3 thousand hryvnias on the Ukrainian side.
- Visa or Mastercard.
- Ukrainian eSIM or starter SIM (can buy in Mohyliv-Podilskyi).
- Vehicle technical passport, "Green Card" with Ukraine coverage, driving licence.
- Pet documents, if applicable.
- Route on offline map — mobile internet near the Moldovan border can be unstable.
Avoiding Transnistria
If you're moving from Chișinău via Tiraspol towards Odesa — that's a route through Transnistria, which is not recognised by Ukraine. The Ukrainian border on this direction (Kuchurhan) is officially closed for foreigners or significantly restricted because of the unresolved Transnistria status.
The safe route from Chișinău to Odesa is via Bender, through official Moldovan control on the M4, then through the Kuchurhan crossing — or, more reliably, via Siret (B6) and along the Black Sea through Ukraine.
Check the actual status of the Kuchurhan crossing on the SBGS site a day before travel. Mohyliv-Podilskyi is stable and always working.
