Ukraine's visa regime with Latin America is mixed. Some countries have visa-free 90/180 (like the EU and US), others require a tourist C-visa. Before planning a trip, always check the status for your passport on the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry site (mfa.gov.ua) or at the Ukrainian embassy in your country.

How to apply for a C-visa
If your passport requires a visa:
-
Find the Ukrainian embassy in your country. If your country has no Ukrainian embassy — the nearest regional one (often in Brazil, Argentina, or Mexico).
-
Fill in the application form via Ukraine's e-visa site: e-visa.mfa.gov.ua. Upload scanned documents.
-
Documents for submission:
- International passport, valid for 6+ months
- 2 colour photos 35x45 mm
- Confirmation of housing booking in Ukraine
- Confirmation of return ticket
- Bank statement showing sufficient funds
- Insurance policy with Ukraine coverage
- Tourist invitation (optional but useful)
-
Visa fee payment. $65 for standard processing, $100 for express (3 working days).
-
Review — up to 15 working days standard, 3 days express.
-
Visa receipt in passport via consulate or courier.
E-visa allows online submission without a consular visit for most tourist cases. But some categories (volunteering, religious activity) require a personal visit.
Documents for visa-free entry
If you're from a visa-free Latin American country:
Passport. Valid for the entire stay. Six-month buffer is not formally required but recommended.
Insurance policy. With Ukraine coverage. Latin American policies often exclude Ukraine due to war risks; check terms. Ukrainian insurers sell policies through local agents for $5-15 per week.
Purpose of visit. Tourism, visiting relatives, business, study — any clear answer.
Return ticket or exit plan. Recommended to have on you.
Confirmation of housing booking for first nights. Recommended.
Logistics: routes from Latin America to Ukraine
There are no direct flights between Latin America and Ukraine. Standard routes:
Via Europe.
- São Paulo → Madrid (Iberia) → Warsaw (LO) → bus/train to Kyiv
- Buenos Aires → Madrid → Warsaw → Kyiv
- Mexico City → Madrid → Warsaw → Kyiv
- Rio → Lisbon (TAP) → Warsaw → Kyiv
This is the most popular route — through Spain or Portugal to Poland, then ground transport.
Via Turkey.
- São Paulo → Istanbul (Turkish Airlines) → Europe → Ukraine
- Buenos Aires → Istanbul → Europe → Ukraine
Turkish Airlines is the main hub between Latin America and Europe.
Via the US.
- Latin America → Miami → Frankfurt → Warsaw → Kyiv
- Mexico City → New York → Warsaw → Kyiv
More expensive, but sometimes faster.
Total travel time — 24-36 hours with transfers.
Cards, money, phone
Cards. Latin American Visa, Mastercard work in Ukraine without problems. American Express — limited in small towns, fine in major cities.
Brazilian and Mexican cards often get blocked on first Ukraine charges due to fraud checks. Notify your bank via mobile app before the trip.
Revolut, Wise — handy for converting BRL/MXN/ARS to UAH at interbank rate.
Cash. US dollars or euros — universal. Brazilian reals, Argentine pesos, Mexican pesos are not accepted in Ukraine; exchange only at specialised offices at a poor rate.
Phone. Latin American roaming to Ukraine is very expensive. Buy a Ukrainian eSIM on airalo.com (from $20 per month) or holafly.com (from $30 per week). Activates immediately upon entry.
WhatsApp and Telegram are the main communication apps in Ukraine. Calls home through them are free.
Safety: martial law and tips
Martial law in Ukraine requires:
- Curfew 23:00-05:00 in most regions.
- Air alerts — install the "Air Alert" app (Spanish interface available).
- Front-line areas — Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, Donetsk, Sumy. Not recommended without serious reason.
- Safer regions — Lviv, Uzhhorod, Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Kyiv.
Spanish-speaking consultants at the Argentine, Brazilian, Mexican embassies in Kyiv — limited availability. In an emergency, the first contact is your country's embassy (most operate in Kyiv with reduced staff).
